Week 6 Theories 2

There is, as yet, no clear consensus on a theory that explains the existence of dark matter.
Describe an alternative theory, in as much detail as you can. Comment on the strength of the evidence for this theory.
Remember to quote sources for your information - 3 sources would be a good number.

  1. I had found a website called phys.org which explains that so far we have represented dark energy as "a cosmological relic that has essentially remained stable since its creation." therefore saying that although we cannot see the particles we know they have been stable since the beginning of the universe and therefore the universe must have been stable since the start.

However, the website then went onto saying the new theory, demonstrated by Dr. Michael Baker and Prof. Joachim Kopp, which states that in the beginning the dark matter is explained using the symmetry principle but the universe may have gone through a phase where the symmetry principle was broken. Therefore meaning that the dark matter may have decayed. Meanwhile the symmetry that stabilises dark matter would have been re-established During the electroweak phase transition therefore enabling it to continue to exist in the universe to the present day. "The stability of dark matter is usually explained by a symmetry principle. However, in their paper, Dr. Michael Baker and Prof. Joachim Kopp demonstrate that the universe may have gone through a phase during which this symmetry was broken. This would mean that it is possible for the hypothetical dark matter particle to decay. During the electroweak phase transition, the symmetry that stabilizes dark matter would have been re-established, enabling it to continue to exist in the universe to the present day."

Furthermore I cannot say I am 100% sure on the certainty and reliability of this website because I have never heard of the website but I then went onto discover that the website was for professional use and could not be re-written by a third party.
